Sophia Masters is an emerging visual artist based in Sydney whose work delves into the nuances of intimacy. Her paintings are a meditation on the fleeting and often unspoken moments that define relationships. Sophia’s exploration of liminal spaces holds the thresholds between violence, affection, presence and absence in suspension. Whether it is through intertwining bodies or solitary figures, each work offers a glimpse into the emotional landscapes that shape our experiences from one moment to the next
Artist Statement
In this exhibition, my works explore the body as a metaphorical frontier and liminal space, engaging with the concept of uncharted territories within the human psyche. In my piece "Horizon", the body's form becomes a boundary dividing the known from the unknown. Here, the body functions not only as a figurative entity but as a landscape echoing how the "frontier" exists as a transitional space between existential uncertainty and self-discovery. However, in my series "Body to Body ", the intertwined figures explore the frontier of human relationships, where the boundary between intimacy and conflict becomes blurred. Just as characters in Westerns confront the unknown dangers of the desert, these works reflect the tension between vulnerability and power in human connections. Together, these works explore the frontier as both an internal and external space—a place of transition, confrontation, and ultimate reckoning with the deepest version of ourselves.
